New Jersey Updated Car Insurance Minimums

Posted by Linda O. Khorozian | Feb 14, 2025 | 0 Comments

In recent years, New Jersey has enacted legislation to increase the minimum required coverage for auto insurance policies. As of January 2025, drivers in New Jersey are required to carry the following minimum coverage:

  • Bodily Injury Liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage Liability: $25,000 per accident.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): $15,000 per person.

These updated requirements represent an increase from previous minimums, aiming to provide better financial protection for drivers and accident victims. Here you will find some more information about the types of available coverage under your car insurance policy.

Additionally, legislation has been introduced to further raise the minimum amounts of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage under standard auto insurance policies to $50,000 for accidents causing injury or death to a single person, $100,000 for accidents causing injury or death to multiple people, and $25,000 for property damage in accidents not involving hit-and-run vehicles. This bill also proposes increasing the minimum property damage liability coverage under basic auto insurance policies to $15,000 per accident.

It's important for New Jersey drivers to review their current auto insurance policies to ensure they meet these updated minimum coverage requirements. Consulting with an insurance professional can help in understanding these changes and adjusting coverage accordingly.
