On Friday, March 7, 2025, at approximately 5:50 a.m., a serious multi-vehicle collision occurred on Route 70 near Airport Road in Lakewood, New Jersey. A Cadillac CT5 Blackwing was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes at a high rate of speed when it collided head-on with a Mazda CX5, subsequently involving a total of eight vehicles. The Cadillac caught fire upon coming to rest, trapping the driver inside. Emergency responders extricated the driver, who suffered severe burns and was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center before being transferred to Weill Cornell Medicine Burn Center in New York City, where he remains in critical condition. The Mazda driver was also airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center and is in critical condition. Occupants of the other vehicles were not injured. The crash led to the temporary closure of Route 70 eastbound from New Hampshire Avenue to Airport Road. The incident is under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit, Lakewood Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
