The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL), alongside the Attorney General's Office, has initiated legal action against Grand Street Construction and five subcontractors for labor violations during the construction of a 32-story residential tower at 88 Regent Street in Jersey City. The violations include failure to pay timely wages and overtime, denial of earned sick leave, and improper classification of workers. The investigation, which began in 2021, uncovered $1.3 million owed in back wages and penalties.
The subcontractors involved are BWK Construction, P&B Partitions, Blue Star Drywall, Drywall Builders, and Williams Drywall. Additional findings revealed that 14 subcontractors had pending tax issues, with assessments totaling over $104,000 in back taxes.
Attorney General Matthew Platkin emphasized the state's commitment to protecting construction workers, stating, "Our state's construction workers make enormous contributions to our state's economy, and they deserve the full protection of our state's labor laws."
Understanding Workers' Compensation and Labor Law Violations
Labor law violations, such as those identified in this case, can have significant implications for workers, including loss of wages, benefits, and protections. In New Jersey, workers are entitled to timely payment, overtime compensation, earned sick leave, and proper classification as employees. Misclassification can lead to denial of workers' compensation benefits and other legal protections.
If you believe your rights have been violated in the workplace, it's crucial to seek legal assistance to navigate the complexities of labor laws and ensure you receive the compensation and protections you deserve.
